Resided at the Hwange National Park in Matabeleland, Zimbabwe
Poached (killed) by American dentist, Walter Palmer, of Minnesota
Loud mouth celebrities and animal rights activists came out in a full force media blitz after his death.
The world was outraged by his inhumane death, yet, remained silent about Zimbabwe's well documented human rights abuses.
He was named after imperialist, Cecil Rhodes.
When his body was discovered, he'd been skinned and decapitated.
His death put the hunting community on the defensive, with many hunters vigorously arguing the difference between hunting and poaching.
He was a popular tourist attraction at Hwange National Park.
Conservationists and researchers said he never demonstrated aggressive behavior toward tourists.
He was famous for his black mane.
He wandered around injured for 40 hours after being struck with an arrow, until Palmer (and guides) tracked him down and shot him to death.
His death brought international awareness to poaching and big game 'trophy hunting'.
