U.S. Governor
    (November 19, 1962- )
    Born in Hanford, California
    Republican
    Lieutenant Governor of Alaska (2006-09)
    10th Governor of Alaska (2009-14)
Succeeded Governor Sarah Palin following her sudden resignation from office (3 July 2009; took office July 26th)
Elected to a full term as Governor the next year, defeating former State Representative Ethan Berkowitz in the general election (Nov. 2010)
Narrowly defeated for a second term by a bipartisan 'unity ticket' of Republica-turned-Independent Bill Walker and Democrat Byron Mallott (Nov. 2014)
He was never Mrs. Palin's first choice for Lieutenant Governor.
He lost his Congressional primary in the same election cycle that his Governor lost the Vice Presidency.
The New York Times' much-publicized release of 24,000 Palin administration emails (2011) showed that he acted like a two-faced sycophant.
He inherited the governorship under very unusual circumstances (the incumbent very publicly resigning after a heated Presidential race).
He was knee-deep in the 'corrupt bastard' politics of the oil industry (perhaps more than any previous governor of the state).
He presided over a massive state deficit and cover-ups of cronyism in the Alaskan National Guard.
He angered many Alaskans by reversing Palin's signature legislative achievements, ACES; lifting imposed taxes on oil and gas companies operating in the state (the revenue was directed back to the taxpayer).
He became such a state liability that Palin publicly backed his opponent in the 2014 midterm elections.
The result was that - in a year of record gains for the GOP in an election year - he was one of only two sitting Republican governors to lose his election (albeit in a close race).
He shares a name with a U.S. Navy SEAL who authored the 2012 bestseller, 'Outlaw Platoon.'
His family moved to Alaska when he was ten after his father was stationed at Fort Richardson by the US Army.
He obtained a juris doctorate from the University of Puget Sound School of Law (1987).
He was named the Most Effective Freshman Legislator by his colleagues in the Alaska House of Representatives (1993).
His and Palin's surprise wins in both the GOP Primary and the General dealt a huge upset to the political establishment in the state.
He found out about Palin's plans to resign the office of Governor only minutes prior to her televised announcement.
He was the first non-elected Alaska Governor to be elected in his own right.
