U.S. Chief Justice
    (March 19, 1891-July 9, 1974)
Attended the University of California, Berkeley
    30th Governor of California (1942-1953)
Chief Justice of the United States (1953-1969)
Headed the Warren Commission which investigated the assassination of President John F. Kennedy (1963)
He supported the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II.
He was the Republican nominee for the vice-presidency on a ticket headed by Thomas A. Dewey (1948).
His Warren Commission relied almost completely on FBI reports in order to determine who assassinated JFK.
It ultimately sided with the 'lone gunman' theory, criticized by skeptics and conspiracy theorists alike.
He earned his initial reputation as a tough-on-crime District Attorney in California with none of his convictions overturned on appeal.
He won the Republican, Democratic and Progressive primary elections and thus ran unopposed for the governorship of California, the only man to do so (1946).
He became known as a libertarian chief justice who supported civil rights, and as a result, was hated by many conservatives in the South and elsewhere.
He provoked the distribution of 'Impeach Earl Warren' bumper stickers and 'Warren Impeachment Kits' because of his court's decisions siding with civil rights causes.
He was one of the few high-ranking activists in the status quo 1950's.
His court made landmark decisions in 'Brown v. the Board of Education' and 'Miranda v. Arizona.'
He said: 'It is the spirit and not the form of law that keeps justice alive.'
The 'Earl Warren Bill of Rights Project' is named in his honor.
