Why he might be annoying:

Large (and critical) passages in 'The Name of the Rose' are in Latin, meaning you have to stop reading the book as it nears its climax and try to find a translation to continue.
When asked why he wrote The Name of the Rose, he answered that he felt like poisoning a monk.
He left the Catholic Church in his early twenties, but fifty years later he still seemed obsessed with it in his writings.
He didn't have email and disliked using the internet in his research because searches provide too many sources and he couldn't look at all of them.
    He chain-smoked.
None of his writings, academic or popular received a major award.

Why he might not be annoying:

In addition to semiotics, he made major contributions to the study of aesthetics, anthropology and literary theory.
