Mistress

The Resume

    (November 9, 1896-March 21, 1991)
    Born in Marion, Ohio
    Mistress of Warren G. Harding
Gave birth to his daughter, Elizabeth Ann (1919)
Wrote the book ‘The President’s Daughter’ (1928)

Why she might be annoying:

She became obsessed with Harding when she was a teenager.
Some of her behavior – calling the Hardings’ house when she suspected Warren was in and his wife was out; waiting outside his office, then following him home; memorizing his license plate and watching for his car – was borderline stalkerish.
As President, Harding used the Secret Service to send messages and money to her – and to warn the couple of the approach of First Lady Florence Harding.
She and Harding frequently trysted in a clothes closet adjoining his office.
She unsuccessfully sued the Harding estate for child support.
She was unable to prove the affair in court since she had destroyed Harding’s love letters to her.
She became reclusive in her old age.
Many historians had doubted that Harding could have fathered her child, claiming a childhood case of mumps had left him sterile.

Why she might not be annoying:

At the time her affair with Harding began, he was also sleeping with Carrie Phillips.
She refused Harding’s suggestions of either having an abortion or sending her daughter to a Catholic orphanage.
She said she wrote her tell-all book about the affair solely to provide for her daughter after Warren Harding died and his widow cut off his regular support payments.
One Congressman anxious to preserve the late President’s reputation introduced a bill in the House of Representative to ban the sale of her book.
Her grandson told the New York Times that she was in love with Harding ‘until the day she died.’
DNA testing of her grandchildren and several Harding grandnieces and grandnephews confirmed that Elizabeth Ann really was the President’s daughter (2015).
