Organization

The Resume

    (November 14, 1946- )
Group of actors, journalists and other people working in the television industry
    Divided into three branches
Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (in charge of honoring Primetime Programming)
National Academy (in charge of honoring Daytime, News and Sports programming)
International Academy (in charge of honoring International programming)
    Approximately 15,000 members
Best known for creating the Emmy Awards
Headquartered in New York and Los Angeles

Why they might be annoying:

Originally they were one organization that had bi-coastal headquarters.
However, a bitter feud between the two factions over voting privileges and other demands led to a split into the organization(s) as we know today.
There have been numerous attempts to reunite ATAS and NATAS, but they so far have failed.
Until recently, they have been reluctant to honor broadband television (programming broadcast over the World Wide Web).
When the Screen Actors Guild went on strike in 1980, it left the ceremony with very little star power.
It took 19 years for them to recognize Susan Lucci's talent.
They (along with FOX <12003>) had the nerve to censor <510>Sally Field and Kathy Griffin's acceptance speeches.
The nomination procedure underwent an 'evolution' preventing popular series such as Lost and Desperate Housewives from getting nominated frequently (2006).

Why they might not be annoying:

They honor the best in television just like the people behind the Oscars and the Grammys.
They recognize accomplishments in television outside regular programming such as the College Television Awards.
They created the Television Academy Hall of Fame honoring TV legends such as Lucille Ball and Milton Berle.
They give out more awards than the people at the Grammys, Oscars and Tonys combined.
