Why he might be annoying:

He was a pimp.
He was a big man who had a big temper.
During a concert in Philadelphia he slammed a piano lid on his pianist's hand and punched his trombonist, Jimmy Knepper, in the mouth.
His album titles were usually a play on his last name.
He smoked.

Why he might not be annoying:

He spoke out against racial segregation.
Many of his albums are critically claimed 'masterpieces.'
He supposedly started the smashing of equipment on stage that so many rock stars have tried to emulate, like Jimi Hendrix and Pete Townshend.
He was also a formidable pianist.
Mingus is the namesake of Mingus Rude, a character in Jonathan Lethem's novel 'The Fortress of Solitude.'
He held 'Jazz workshops' which enabled young composers to have their new works performed in concert and on recordings.
He was diagnosed with ALS in the 1970's.
He continued working, even when confined to a wheelchair, up until his death in 1979.
His entire lifeworks of scores and memorabilia are in the possession of the Library of Congress.
He is known as 'the king of jazz bass.'
