He was exiled from mainland Europe, fleeing to London (1848).
He was an academic who wrote about the needs and wants of the lower classes.

He believed that the working class should make the laws and run the government.
He called religion the opiate of the masses.
His economic philosophy was that workers should produce as much as wanted and take as much as needed.
