Sentenced to death for the 1965 murder of Edward ‘Teddy’ Deegan in Chelsea, Massachusetts (1968, commuted 1997)
Exonerated by the Supreme Court (2001)
Accorded a portion of a $102 million settlement for malicious prosecution (2007)
He did not have any trade skills, instead working ten hours a day, six days a week.
He could barely afford medical care for his daughter, a Down syndrome victim who died at two months old.
The chief witness against him was a mob hitman he owed and refused to pay.
The FBI was fully and completely aware he and three other defendants in the Deegan case were innocent. Yet the bureau chose to protect their star informant – a loan shark and known sadist and perjurer – instead.
He wasn’t even the longest-serving – or latest-released – defendant in the original trial.
Prior to his arrest, he was never involved in organized crime.
He was one of only two defendants to survive to exoneration.
His lawyer fought on his behalf without charge or any federal support.
His wife visited him every single week of his sentence.
He came home to a 35-year-old granddaughter.
He does not expect to see a penny of what he was eventually compensated — which wasn’t considered anywhere near acceptable.
