    (March 28, 1951-December 4, 2007)
    Born in Dayton, Ohio
Won three World series of Poker Bracelets (1978, 1982 & 2006)
Won nearly $3 million in tournament play
In 1991 became the youngest player ever (age 40) to be elected to the Poker Hall of Fame
    Won the 2006 WSOP $50,000 buy-in H.O.R.S.E. event for a record $1,784,640 first prize
Died of pneumonia at his Las Vegas home at age 56
His real middle name is Edward and he most likely didn't earn his nickname from eating salty potato snack treats.
He turned down Harvard U. to attend Dartmouth College, then was admitted to Stanford to become a lawyer but never attended after discovering Las Vegas.
His longtime friend and business partner Doyle Brunson stated, 'We went to look for the Titanic. We went to look for Noah's Ark. We were two of the biggest suckers whenever it came to business, but we both had poker to fall back on. Thank God we could play, so we always survived.'
He needed to play 7 hours and 286 hands to win the 2006 event, a record for the WSOP.
He divorced his wife shortly before dying.
He had rheumatic fever as a kid and was off from school for a year, so his mom taught him some card games, including poker.
He taught his frat brothers and some professors at Dartmouth the finer points of poker, earning him a frat room renamed the David E. Reese Memorial Card Room.
The first card tounament he entered in Las Vegas during the early '70s he won $40,000.
Many poker enthusiasts considered him the best seven-card stud player ever, but he excelled in other forms of poker, gin and backgammon.
He wrote the seven-card stud section of his friend Brunson's famed 1979 book on poker playing 'Super/System.'
His even temperament and winning consistency made him a favorite among fans and opponents alike.
The hospital he went to sent him home thinking he wasn't sick enough to be admitted and he died in his sleep.
