In the 1970's he fled to Germany to escape Swedish tax authorities.
He did little of note since the early 1980's.
He was gloomy, and said he'll probably commit suicide when his health starts to go.
He is often confused with the actress Ingrid Bergman, but they are not related.

His work was very influential.

'Entertainment Weekly' named him the eighth greatest film director of all time.
