    (circa 331-363)
    Born in Constantinople
    Roman emperor
Raised a nominal Christian he reverted to the worship of the pagan gods of ancient Rome
Last non-Christian emperor of the Roman Empire
    He worshiped false pagan gods.
    He performed animal sacrifices.
    He believed in reincarnation.
He forbade Christians to work as teachers.
Most of his male relatives were murdered by other royalty to prevent them from competing for the throne.
He was raised mostly by servants and tutors.
Despite little training he proved an excellent general and was proclaimed Caesar by his troops.
He was well read/educated and very bright.
His administrations both on local and imperial level featured cuts in taxes and expenses, and honest and capable management.
His personal life was ascetic and he followed the laws he passed.
Although he attempted to bring back the worship of paganism, he allowed religious freedom, preferring evangelism of his gods over persecuting Christians.
His bringing back paganism was more about his own Neoplatonic philosophical leanings and the desire to restore Rome's past glory than theological conviction.
He was the subject of a truly outstanding biography by Gore Vidal.
His last words after being mortally wounded in battle were 'Vicisti Galilaee,' 'You have won, Galilean.'
