Military Personnel

The Resume

    (April 9, 1951- )
    Born in Columbus, Georgia
Colonel in the United States Army
Known for his role as commander of the 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment in the Battle of Mogadishu (October 3 - 4, 1993)
Inspired the 2001 film 'Black Hawk Down'

Why he might be annoying:

The movie he inspired contains numerous historical inaccuracies.
He was played by walking scandal magnet Tom Sizemore in the film.
He got the Green Mountain Rangers banned from all American Milsim organization events over a disagreement they had.
He titled his book ‘Streets of Mogadishu: Leadership at its Best, Political Correctness at its Worst!’

Why he might not be annoying:

He did a tour of duty in Panama in 1989.
He was deployed to Somalia, during the Civil War in 1993, as part of a special operations detachment tasked with peacekeeping operations on behalf of the United Nations security forces.
He participated in the Battle of Mogadishu - commanding 450 soldiers and sustaining injuries to the neck and arm during the battle.
He famously refused to take cover when he got shot at (figuring that if he got killed, God wanted him in heaven).
He commented on his portrayal in the ‘Black Hawk Down’ film by noting that he doesn't smoke and rarely shouts or swears (unlike as depicted by Tom Sizemore).
He retired from military service, after 28 years, in 2002, and regularly speaks at colleges and events about his experiences overseas.
