    One husband was Black Panther Stokeley Carmichael.
    Her marriage to Carmichael led to the cancellation of her American record contract and her fleeing to Guinea in the 1970s.
    She helped bring attention to South Africa's apartheid policy.
    Harry Belafonte helped her to emigrate to the United States.
    She and Belafonte won the 1966 Grammy for 'Best Folk Recording.'
    The Brazilian soccer team adopted her version of the hit 'Mais Que Nada' as their song for the 1966 World Cup and use it as their theme to this day.
    She survived a plane crash and bout with breast cancer.
    In 1990, she was persuaded by Nelson Mandela to return to South Africa after a 31 year absence.
