    Hosted a variety show on ABC (1957-58)
    Portrayed George Romack in the TV Western 'Whispering Smith' (1961)
    Appeared in the films 'Those Redheads from Seattle' (1953), 'Red Garters' (1954) and 'The Wild Westerners' (1962)
    He signed with Warner Brothers as a potential child star when he was 11. (The contract ended when Mitchell's family moved from LA to San Francisco.)
    He had to drop out as vocalist for the Carmen Cavallaro Orchestra when he developed food poisoning.
    He started his singing career as 'Al Grant.'
    He got a new name when producer Mitch Miller combined his own first name with his impression that the singer was 'a nice guy.'
    He served with the US Navy in World War II.
    Early on, he showed enough promise as a singer that the Metropolitan Opera expressed interest in signing him up.
    He got his big break when Frank Sinatra refused to record 'My Heart Cries for You' despite a band at the ready in the studio.
    He developed a very loyal following in England, where he regularly sold out concert halls well into the 1990s.
