Religious Figure
    (January 7, 1502-April 10, 1585)
    Born in Bologna, Italy
Pope of the Catholic Church (May 13, 1572-April 10, 1585)
He studied law before becoming pope.
    He had an illegitimate son.
He wouldn't let any bishop take residence anywhere but their see.
He was unwelcoming of outside advice.
He trounced the power of the cardinals.
Astronomer Christopher Clavius made the Gregorian calendar, yet he gets all the credit.
He expanded the Index of Forbidden Books (many of what was added were notable scientific journals).
Due to it moving dates forward, his calendar initially cheated renters out of a week and a half's rent.
He hated Protestants and his interventions in Protestant England caused the English to suspect every Roman Catholic as a traitor.
He celebrated the crushing of French Protestants during the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre.
He left his successor a mountain of shit to deal with after he tried to confiscate property of nobles and they revolted.
He was elected pope in less than 24 hours.
He built a beautiful chapel in the Basilica of St. Peter.
He was a generous contributor to higher education.
Though more than a century passed before it was readily accepted, the Gregorian calendar is now the standard.
