Sports Executive
He was a college star whose pro career didn't pan out.
Because of his initials and job title, he was known as 'GMGM' in some circles.
He was suspended one month without pay by the NHL after he attacked an opposing coach in protest of a dirty play in a pre-season game (September 25, 1999).
He was accused by hockey pundits of deliberately throwing the 2003-04 season in order to secure the #1 overall pick, by dumping all his established veteran players for fringe players, prospects and draft picks.
He was fired by the Capitals and replaced by his longtime friend Brian MacLellan, who was credited with being the architect of the 2018 Stanley Cup winning team.
To add further insult to injury, he presided over the Golden Knights team that lost to the Capitals team he essentially built through the draft.
Some hockey pundits felt his success with the Golden Knights was a result of the NHL giving preferential expansion draft rules to the team, which allowed them to build a playoff contender easily.
He is notorious for making head scratching trades and signings.
He was the second player in NCAA hockey history to win the Hobey Baker Award.
He was one of the first players in NHL goal to score his first three goals in the Stanley Cup playoffs, prior to ever playing a regular season game.
He worked as an intern on Wall Street during the off-season while playing for the Rangers.
He guided the Capitals to the franchise's first ever berth in the Stanley Cup Finals (1998).
He pulled off a successful rebuild for the Capitals, in which he drafted Alexander Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom, both of whom would serve as key cogs in the team's perennial Stanley Cup contender status.
He and his family allowed Alexander Ovechkin to live with them during the latter's rookie season.
He was the first general manager in the history of the Golden Knights franchise.
