White House Hostess

The Resume

    (February 13, 1816-December 29, 1878)
    Birth name was Angelica Singleton
Married Captain Abraham Van Buren (November 1838)
Daughter-in-law of President Martin Van Buren

Why she might be annoying:

Upon graduation, she visited Washington D.C. in hopes of landing a husband.
Her style of entertaining was based on what she learned in Europe.
Due to the poor economic conditions and her wanting to landscape the White House like a European Palace, she caught the ire of Pennsylvania Whig Congressman Charles Ogle.
Congressman Ogle referred to her and President Martin Van Buren as 'Gold Spoon' and compare them as a ruling monarch (1841).

Why she might not be annoying:

Because President Martin Van Buren was elected President as a widower of 18 years, she stepped in to perform First Lady duties.
She went to prep school attending Madame Grelaud's Seminary in Philadelphia.
President Martin Van Buren was thrilled with his son's marriage because it gave him political ties to a Southern aristocratic family.
On her honeymoon, she visited the royalty of France and England.
French minister Adolphe Fourier de Bacourt, who was not fond of Americans, found her to be graceful and put her in a class with Europe's elite.
Her only daughter lived a few hours.
She wintered in South Carolina and summered in Kinderhook, New York and eventually lived in New York City.
    She was extremely charitable.
During the Civil War, although a southerner living in the north, she supported the Union but sent blankets and supplies for Confederate POWs.
