U.S. Governor

The Resume

    (December 1, 1952- )
    Born in Bloomington, Illinois
    Co-founded Columbia Hospital Corporation (1989)
Merged with Hospital Corporation America to form Columbia/HCA, the largest for-profit health care company in the US (1989)
    CEO of Columbia/HCA (1994-97)
Was a partner of George W. Bush in owning the Texas Rangers
Governor of Florida (Inaugurated January 4, 2011)
    Republican

Why he might be annoying:

While he was CEO of Columbia/HCA, the company systematically overcharged Medicare and Medicaid; it was eventually fined $1.7 billion, which was the biggest health care fraud settlement at the time.
He was against Medicaid expansion during his first term as governor, supported it during his re-election campaign, then opposed it again during his second term.
He instructed the state Department of Environmental Protection to avoid using the terms ‘climate change’ and ‘global warming’ in official documents.
He keeps trying to restrict voting rights and keeps losing the resulting court cases.
When he announced the phone number for a state information line concerning a meningitis outbreak, he screwed up one of the digits and accidentally gave out the number for a phone sex line (2012).
After Hurricane Irma, he ignored existing debris removal contracts and issued emergency contracts – costing $30 million more than the existing contracts – to two firms whose owners are major contributors to the Republican Party (2017).

Why he might not be annoying:

He married his high school sweetheart.
He made his first foray into business while working his way through college, buying a failing donut shop and turning it around.
After the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting, he urged that the minimum age for buying rifles be raised from 18 to 21, and said, ‘I want to make it virtually impossible for anyone who has mental issues to use a gun.’
