    Her parents wanted her to go into a more traditional field, like law or banking.
    Her first baseball job, as an intern for the Chicago White Sox, paid so little that she had to work two additional jobs to make ends meet (1990).
    Before being hired for the Marlins, she interviewed unsuccessfully for GM positions at the Dodgers, Seattle Mariners, San Diego Padres, Anaheim Angels, and San Francisco Giants.
    She was an MVP on the University of Chicago softball team.
    After three months as an intern, she had impressed White Sox management enough to be offered a full-time position.
    She proved a skilled negotiator during contract disputes, including getting the better of ‘super agent’ Scott Boras in arbitration talks for pitcher Alex Fernandez (1996).
    Mets official (and former pitcher) Bill Singer was fired after mocking her Chinese background during a conference of MLB general managers (2003).
    George Steinbrenner said, ‘She had to prove herself, probably more than a man. But she’s been put through the test and she passed with flying colors.’
    She said she was rarely treated differently as a female executive, except ‘When I’m in the room, not as much cursing goes on.’
