    Wrote the novels ‘The Mysteries of Paris’ (1843) and ‘The Wandering Jew’ (1845)
    Wrote the series of historical novels ‘Mysteries of the People’ (1849-56)

Why he might be annoying:

    After he inherited a fortune from his father, he became a dandy.
    His novels were controversial for their violence and anti-Catholicism.
    Encyclopedia Britannica noted ‘his implausible plots and one-dimensional characters.’
    Parts of ‘Mysteries of the People’ were a source for Maurice Joly’s ‘A Dialogue in Hell Between Machiavelli and Montesquieu,’ which in turn inspired the anti-Semitic hoax ‘The Protocols of the Elders of Zion.’

Why he might not be annoying:

    Empress Josephine was his godmother.
    He was a naval surgeon who saw action in the French Expedition to Spain (1823) and Greek War of Independence (1827).
    ’The Mysteries of Paris’ influenced Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables.
    He was exiled for opposing the coup in which Napoleon III made himself dictator (1851).
    He coined the proverb ‘Revenge is a dish best served cold.’
