    (February 8, 1834-February 2, 1907)
    Born in Tobolsk, Russian Federation
Wrote the textbook 'Principles of Chemistry' (1868)

He reportedly shaved and got a haircut only once a year.
He became obsessed with Anna Popova and threatened to commit suicide if she turned down his marriage proposal.
He married Popova a month before his divorce from his first wife became final.
Although he is generally credited with creating the periodic table, several scientists had developed earlier versions.
When the Orthodox Church wanted him punished for his bigamy, the Czar refused, saying 'Mendeleev has two wives, but I have only one Mendeleev.'
In his periodic table, he boldly predicted the existence of three unknown elements.
He was proven right with the discoveries of gallium (1875), scandium (1879) and germanium (1886).
As Director of the Bureau of Weights and Measures, he established the standard requiring Russian vodka to be 80 proof (1894).
