Military Personnel
    (March 16, 1822-September 23, 1892)
    Born in Louisville, Kentucky
Union General during the US Civil War
Commanded the Army of the Mississippi (February-June, 1862) and Army of Virginia (June-September, 1862)
While serving under John C. Fremont, he constantly worked behind the scenes to get Fremont removed from command.
Upon taking command of the Army of Virginia, he sent his subordinates a pompous message ('I have come to you from the West, where we have always seen the backs of our enemies') that immediately alienated most of them.
Brigadier General Alpheus Williams wrote, 'More insolence, superciliousness, ignorance, and pretentiousness were never combined in one man. It can with truth be said of him that he had not a friend in his command from the smallest drummer boy to the highest general officer. All hated him.'
He was soundly defeated by Robert E. Lee at the Second Battle of Bull Run (August 29-30, 1862) and was soon removed from command.
During the Indian Wars, he declared, 'It is my purpose to utterly exterminate the Sioux.'
During the Mexican-American War, he rose in the ranks from second lieutenant to captain.
He was one of four officers assigned to escort President-Elect Abraham Lincoln from Illinois to Washington, DC (1861).
In the Western theater in the Civil War, he had several successes, such as the capture of Island No. 10, in which he lost 23 men while taking 5,000 Confederate prisoners (April 7, 1862).
