    Best known for her role as high school counselor Liz McIntyre on the TV series 'Room 222' (1969-74) and Harriet DeLong on the TV series 'In The Heat of The Night' (1989-1994)
    Acted in 'Blacula (1972),' 'The Soul of Nigger Charley (1973),' 'Let's Do It Again (1975),' 'A Piece of the Action (1977),' 'Capricorn One (1978),' 'Marvin & Tige (1983),' 'Ghost Dad (1990),' 'On Thin Ice: The Tai Babilonia Story (1990),' 'Ritual (2000)' and 'Proud (2004)'
    Won two Emmys for the PBS special 'Voices Of Our People: In Celebration Of African American Poetry'
    Wrote the novel 'Freshwater Road' about life in the south during the 1960s (2005)
    She dropped out of the University of Michigan to experience the civil rights movement in the '60s south.
    She is thrice divorced, including ex-husband Bill Withers.
    When married to her third husband she alternated her name as Denise Nicholas-Hill, with and without the hyphen.
    She was nominated for three straight Golden Globe Awards for her work on 'Room 222' without winning (1970-72).
    She went into in debt to complete her novel.
    She eventually graduated the University of Michigan.
    She experienced racial hatred while touring with the Negro Ensemble Company and The Free Southern Theater.
    A bigoted cop in Mississippi put a gun to her head and threatened to blow it off.
    Her younger sister was murdered.
    She wrote several episodes for 'In The Heat of The Night.'
    She won five NAACP Image Awards.
