Why he might be annoying:

He tried to get his kids an audition for Lawrence Welk (they were turned down).
He allegedly wanted to pass on his kids' recording One Bad Apple because the phrase 'sock it to you' was used.
He may have inadvertently mishandled funds, leading to the Osmonds' decline (they lost around $80 million).
He had planned to travel to Chicago to tape a segment with his kids for the Oprah Winfrey Show but died before he was able to do it.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was a devout Mormon, serving two missions for The Latter-day Saints, one in Hawaii and the other in the United Kingdom.
He was a veteran of World War II.
He loved to sing and taught his children to sing barbershop harmony.
He did not exploit his children in the entertainment industry.
He acted as the Osmonds' de facto manager early on, but later transitioned that role to his two hearing impaired children.
His wife died shortly before their 60th anniversary.
After his death, 120+ members of the extended family appeared in a tribute on the Oprah Winfrey Show. The show aired the day of his funeral.
