Why he might be annoying
He won the Olympic gold medal even though he made errors in his long program.
He has a high-pitched voice.
He mugs shamelessly when performing on the ice; the need for approval can be exhausting.
He gets overly excited when commentating.
He is shorter than most of the women he has dated.
He admitted in his biography to homophobia (since cured).
He also outed a couple of skaters who died from AIDS (they had decided to keep their sexuality private – thanks a lot, Scott).
Why he might not be annoying
He was adopted.
He suffered from a rare intestinal disorder which kept his body from absorbing nutrients; though cured, it stunted his growth.
His mother died from breast cancer after seeing him compete in his first US National competition in 1977.
In 1997, he was diagnosed with testicular cancer, which he beat through surgery and chemotherapy.
He was diagnosed with a rare brain tumor which he is undergoing treatment for (2004).
He put up with teasing and bullying because of his height and his chosen sport.
He is always pleasant and gracious to fans and reporters.
He has worked very hard to enhance the image of male figure skaters; he created his ‘Stars on Ice’ tour for this reason.
