Born in Worcester, Massachusetts
Swimming pool accident at age three caused coma (August 9, 1987)
Emerged from coma with akinetic mutism (only able to move eyes and fingers)
Taken to Međugorje, Yugoslavia, a pilgrimage site where the Virgin Mary's spirit is said to dwell
Afterwards was dubbed a 'victim soul' that took on the suffering of others and perform miracles
Died of cardio-respiratory failure at age 23
Why she might be annoying
Even as an adult she was referred to by pilgrims as Little Audrey.
Her mother blamed her near fatal heart attack on the Međugorje trip on being in close proximity to Yugoslavia's largest abortion clinic.
Her home was converted into a site for pilgrims to view her and ask for miracles.
A sample of 'holy oil' taken from one of her weeping icons was analyzed as 80% corn or soybean oil and 20% chicken fat.
On Penn & Teller's Bullshit! co-host Penn Jillette, upon seeing a price list for Audrey swag, wanted to give her mother a conscience since 'the one she's got is clearly not working.'
Even after death her website continues with T-shirts, angel pins, CDs, books, magnets, etc. being shamelessly sold.
Why she might not be annoying
She was in no position to stop her exploitation.
Some nurses spoke of an overwhelming scent of roses in her room (that's a nice smell).
She never developed bedsores, which may be less of a miracle and more of the meticulous care of a cash cow.
The Catholic Church wisely and conveniently sidestepped the Audrey victim soul/miracles controversy by stating prayers should be said for her, not to her.
