She dressed like a male dandy.
Her poetry, being not entirely Victorian or modern, is hard to classify.
She vowed to never to marry as there was insanity in her family, but this may have been to hide her lesbianism.
Her first collection of poetry wasn't published until she was 46.
She was dominated much of her life by her priggish, middle class mother.

Three of her siblings died as children, and two others were diagnosed with schizophrenia and institutionalized.
She had serious financial problems for years until she was given a civil pension.
She was mostly forgotten after her death until interest was revived in the twenty-first century.
Virginia Woolf said she was 'very good and quite unlike anyone else.'
Severely depressed after her sister's death, she killed herself by drinking Lysol.
