Military Personnel

The Resume

    (June 15, 1906-March 31, 1994)
    Born in Bouillon, Belgium
    General in the Waffen SS
Founder of the fascist 'Rexist Party' in Belgium (1930)
Helped raise the 5th SS Volunteer Brigade, which consisted of Belgian volunteers

Why he might be annoying:

The 'Rexist Party' was originally founded as a militant Catholic group.
Most members of the Rexist Party did not support the Germans who had invaded their country, yet Degrelle ignored them and collaborated with the Nazis.
The emphasis on Catholic values in the Rexist Party was gradually done away with as Degrelle's association with Nazism grew.
He attempted to join the Wehrmacht's Walloon Battalion, a group made up of Belgians, as an officer despite having no military background.
He once assaulted and restrained a Priest who had told him that he was not to attend Mass wearing a military uniform.
He is believed to have been told by Adolf Hitler, that 'If I had a son, I wish he would resemble you.' Degrelle boasted of this for years.
After Germany surrendered, he fled central Europe to Norway, took control of a plane and crash landed it in Spain, where he sought political asylum.
The government of Spain refused to hand him over to Belgian authorities who wanted him tried for treason.
He wore his SS uniform and German military decorations in public for years after the war ended.
In the decades after WWII, he would write and give speeches on pro-Nazi topics.
He called Auschwitz a 'great lie,' and sent an open letter to Pope John Paul II about this idea. The Spanish government later fined Degrelle for it, and made him apologize.
He was able to live out the rest of his life comfortably, and is considered a hero among Neo-Nazi groups.
He cited 'the warriors of Islam' as great friends of fascism.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was Europe's youngest political leader at the time of the founding of the Rexist Party.
    He was a pilot.
By the age of 20, he had been the author of 5 books.
A decorated combat veteran, he was wounded multiple time on the Eastern Front and was awarded the Knight's Cross for bravery.
He was a student of history and art.
