The Resume

    (1895- )
    Born in Sweden
Established by Alfred Nobel to honor advances in biological research
Famous winners include; Francoise Barre-Sinoussi and Luc Montagier for their discovery of HIV, Selman Waksman for the discovery of the first antibiotic effective against TB, and Paul Muller for his research into the efficacy of DDT in pest control
Additionally, Canada's Frederick Banting and James Macleod won it for the discovery of insulin

Why The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine might be annoying:

It is almost always rewarded for research on human beings, leaving out biologists and botanists.
There have been no awards on nine separate occasions.
Of the 195 winners through 2009, there have been only ten women, two Asians (both male), and no African/African-American winners.
Antonio Caetano De Abram Freire Egas Moniz won it for research promoting the use of lobotomies to treat some forms of mental illness.
Decades often elapse between when the work justifying the prize occurs and when the work is awarded. Combined with posthumous nominations not being allowed, this has caused many deserving persons and their research to go unrecognized.

Why The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine might not be annoying:

Of all the Nobel Prizes it is the prize that most directly deals with human well-being.
Almost all of the awards have gone to discoveries that either are, or lead to, cures for human diseases.
It is the most low key and controversy free of the Nobel Prizes and has been particularly lucky to have not been awarded to any major publicity hounds.
The winners get to split a one million dollar (US) plus jackpot!
