    (September 15, 1932- )
    Born in Joliet, Illinois
    Birth name was Ann Weldy
Wrote the Beebo Brinker Chronicles: 'Odd Girl Out' (1957), 'I Am A Woman' (1959), 'Women in the Shadows' (1959), 'Journey to a Woman' (1960), 'The Marriage' (1960) and 'Beebo Brinker' (1962)
Became an English professor and associate dean at Sacramento State University
Called 'the Queen of lesbian pulp fiction'
While raising two young children, she took trips to New York's Greenwich Village for 'field experience.'
She described her character Beebo Brinker as 'quite literally, the butch of my dreams.'
She wrote using a pseudonym at her husband's insistence.
She turned down an invitation to address the pro-gay rights Mattachine Society because of her husband's disapproval.
She developed chronic fatigue syndrome, which she blames on repressing her sexuality for so long.
She said she began writing because 'I was kind of desperate to get some of the things that had been consuming me for a long time down on paper.'
Unlike most pulp fiction of the day, she depicted same-sex relationships in a mostly positive light.
She noted about the letters she received from readers, 'The most important things they learned were that 1) they weren't unique and doomed to lifelong isolation, 2) they weren't 'abnormal,' and 3) there was hope for a happy life.'
She was rediscovered and her books republished in the 1980s.
An award-winning off-Broadway play based on the Beebo Brinker Chronicles was produced by Lily Tomlin and Jane Wagner (2007).
