    (July 10, 1917-June 13, 1998)
Born in Hartlepool, England, United Kingdom
    Birth name was Reginald Smyth
Created the comic strip 'Andy Capp' (1957)
Founding member of the British Cartoonists Association (1966)
He dropped out of school at 14.
An interviewer described his views on marriage as 'dating back to the Neolithic age.'
In an early cartoon that he later called 'dreadful,' Andy's wife Flo sports a black eye while Andy says, 'I'm a man of few pleasures and one of them 'appens to be knockin' yer about.'
'Andy Capp' was accused of 'perpetuating stereotypes of Britain's Northerners,' who were viewed in other parts of England as chronically unemployed layabouts.
He said, 'I don't go along with all this dignity of work.... If there's a system where you can get as much on the dole as you can working, you're going to be a bloody fool to go to work, aren't you?'
    He was left handed.
He served in North Africa during World War II.
'Andy Capp' became an unexpected international success, appearing in newspapers in over 50 countries.
He said of Andy Capp, 'He may be a horrible little man, but he's been very good to me.'
