Why they might be annoying:

Critics frequently described them as sounding like U2 with even less subtlety.
The word ‘histrionic’ crops up a lot in reviews of their records.
Peters announced the band’s breakup from the stage at the end of a tour without having informed the other members of the group (1991).
Peters reformed the band with new members (2000).
On records by the new version of the band, their name would be followed by the year in Roman numerals. (So a 2006 release would be credited to Alarm MMVI.)
Guitarist Sharp formed his own version of the band called AOR – The Spirit of the Alarm (2008).

Why they might not be annoying:

Their song ‘The Stand’ was inspired by the Stephen King novel of the same name.
Rather appropriately, they were the opening act on U2’s War Tour of the US (1983).
They released a version of their album ‘Change’ sung entirely in Welsh, ‘Newid.’
They hoaxed the British music press by releasing the single ’45 R.P.M.’ under the name the Poppy Fields and hiring a young band to lip synch in the music video. The song had made the UK Top 30 before the truth was revealed (2004).
After being diagnosed with lymphocytic leukemia, Peters founded the Love Hope Strength Foundation (2005).
