He was hated by many boxing fans because he was the boxer who earned the heavyweight title after Joe Louis retired.
He defeated Louis in his comeback attempt, but only found himself hated more because he ruined Louis' winning streak.
He became a professional wrestler after his retirement in order to pay the bills, and was known as 'The Cincinnati Cobra.'
He also worked as a bouncer in a nightclub in Kentucky.
He is better known for his losses to Rocky Marciano than for beating Joe Louis or Jersey Joe Walcott.
He could have become the greatest light-heavyweight champion ever, but chose to fight heavyweight instead, and was routinely outweighed by his opponents.
