She was the first lady of a government that supported slavery.
She was a deeply religious woman.
She was a proponent of the Whig party, but changed to reflect her husband's political views.
When she married Jefferson Davis, she was 18 and he was 36. She was 18 years younger than her husband, Jefferson Davis.
She was the first lady of a government that brought Civil War to the United States.
She was a conversationalist and a yenta.
She said politics is 'everything which darkens the sunlight and contracts the happy sphere of home.'

She stood in as first lady when Jane Pierce was too depressed to handled her duties.
She was home schooled and then attended Madame Greenland's school in Philadelphia.
She was very charming.
She petitioned successfully in getting Jefferson Davis released from jail (May 1867).

After the Civil War, she lived in poverty until the mid 1870's.
She retired to 'Beauvoir,' their Mississippi estate and then donated it as a home for Confederate veterans.

She continued writing magazine articles until her death.
