    (June 5, 1868-May 12, 1916)
Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom
Founding member of the Irish Socialist Republican Party and the Irish Citizen Army
De facto commander in chief during the Easter Rising (April 24, 1916) to overthrow British rule in Ireland
    Executed by firing squad
He deserted from the British army (1889).
    He was a Marxist.
He dismissed fellow Irish activists as 'bourgeoisie nationalists.'
The Easter Rising failed to attract much support from the Irish public, partly because many Irish had sons in the British military fighting against Germany.
He had to go to work as a printer's devil at age 10.
He was so badly wounded during the Easter Rising that he could not stand in front of the firing squad and instead was tied to a chair for the execution.
His execution made him a martyr, with his picture often joining the saints on the walls of Irish Catholic homes.
He was voted #64 in the BBC poll of the 100 Greatest Britons.
