    Created the California Perfume Company (1886- ), (became Avon - October 6, 1939)

Why he might be annoying:

    He marketed his product door-to-door.
    He began work as a door-to-door salesman at sixteen.
    He sold books door-to-door with little success.
    Although the company was based and found in New York it was named the California Perfume Company. His main investor was from California.
    He named his son after himself.

Why he might not be annoying:

    As a gimmick to gain entry into homes while selling books, he offered a free vial of perfume. The perfume became an instant hit.
    He and a local pharmacist originated his first perfume.
    During the depression, he instituted short period sales (discounts for a three week period).
    He felt the door-to-door approach was best in rural areas.
    At the time of his death, he employed over 30,000 people.
    Avon is still one of the world's largest sellers of cosmetics.
    His son David McConnell, Jr. inherited Avon.
