Baseball Player
    (October 12, 1906-September 7, 1984)
    Born in San Francisco, California
Shortstop for the Pittsburgh Pirates (1926-27), Washington Senators (1928-34) and Boston Red Sox (1935-45)
.301 batting average, 2285 hits, 170 home runs, 1424 RBIs
    Seven-time All Star (1933-35,1937-38,1941)
Manager for the Washington Senators (1933-34) and Boston Red Sox (1935-47)
General manager of the Red Sox (1947-59)
President of the American League (1959-73)
#4 retired by the Red Sox
Inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame (1956)
He was traded from the Senators to the Red Sox while on his honeymoon with the niece of Senators owner Clark Griffith.
He reportedly felt threatened when the Red Sox signed shortstop Pee Wee Reese to their farm system, and convinced Tom Yawkey to trade Reese to the Brooklyn Dodgers.
As the Red Sox general manager, he refused to integrate the team, including passing up a chance to sign a young Willie Mays.
As AL President, he fired two umpires for 'incompetence' when they tried to organize a union.
Connie Mack said, 'Joe is the best there is in the clutch. With a man on third and one out, I'd rather have Cronin hitting for me than anybody I've ever seen.'
He was the youngest manager of a World Series team (26 in 1933).
The Red Sox paid a then-record $250,000 to acquire him from the Senators.
As AL President, he hired the first black Major League umpire, Emmett Ashford (1966).
