Also appeared in 'The Big Punch' (1948), 'West Point Story' (1950), 'Tea for Two' (1950), 'On Moonlight Bay' (1951), 'By the Light of the Silvery Moon' (1952), 'The Desert Song' (1953), 'Three Sailors and a Girl' (1953), 'Zero to Sixty' (1978) and 'The Pilot' (1980)

His drinking and gambling undermined his career and his marriage.
He said, 'I was one hell of a drunk. I used to stand at the bar and try to outdrink Bogey and Errol Flynn.'
He was arrested for drunk driving during the filming of 'Carousel.'

He served as a navigator with the Army Air Corps in World War II.
After he quit drinking, he was honorary chair of the National Council on Alcoholism (1983-86).
He was good friends with co-star Shirley Jones and godfather of her son Shaun Cassidy.
