    Other books include 'Mother Country' (1989), 'The Death of Adam' (1998), 'Home' (2008), and 'Lila' (2014)
    Won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2005

    Her middle name is Summers.
    Her books are not very plot heavy (her first novel literally centers on cleaning).
    She divorced her husband of twenty years after the success of her first book.
    Despite goading from her fans, she still refuses to get an official Twitter account.
    She said: 'People ask me why I don’t write about contemporary culture. I’d have to educate myself about what contemporary culture is, because all of these words are essentially meaningless to me.'

    Her interest in the ideas of John Calvin informed much of her writings.
    Barack Obama is one of her biggest fans.
    She was awarded a National Humanities Medal by the President in 2012.
    She taught at the Iowa Writers Workshop for twenty five years.
    Her books examine the depiction of rural life and religious faith.
    Her essays have covered topics that range from US history to nuclear pollution to the science-religion debate.
    She said: 'This is an interesting planet. It deserves all the attention you can give it.'
