    (circa 1810 BC-circa 1755 BC)
Conquered a coalition force of Elam, Ashru and Eshnunna
Became the ruler of a united Babylonian Kingdom extending from the Persian Gulf to the Habur River (1760 BC)
Produced one of the first codes of law, the 'Code of Hammurabi'
Encouraged the development of navigation, agriculture, taxation and the construction of many temples and religious buildings
Also known as the 'priest king'
Best known ruler of early civilization
He insisted in being present in all parts of the government, from foreign wars to construction of buildings.
His 'Code of Hammurabi' probably wasn't written by him. Many believe it was based on ancient Sumerian law, yet he gets all the credit.
Many of his laws end with the phrase: 'he shall be put to death.'
His preamble and epilogue to the 'Code of Hammurabi' reeks of arrogance.
He was a hard ass on slaves, often having a less severe punishment reserved for violating a law that protects a slave than if it had been a regular citizen of the empire.
His reign is marked by many, many wars with his neighbors, including kings who had been his ally for much of his reign.
One of his laws says that if a man kills a pregnant girl by accident, his own daughter should be killed.
Babylonian history essentially begins with his reign.
His 'Code of Hammurabi' contained 282 laws ranging from economical provisions to criminal law.
He expanded the empire of Babylon to encompass most of the civilized world at the time.
He worked mainly for the benefit of his people.
His son Sumsuiluna succeeded him and maintained many of his reforms.
