Why he might be annoying:

    He was admitted to the Massachusetts bar without having to take an exam, which he admitted was 'contrary to all principle and precedent.'
    He was a millionaire who disliked other wealthy people.
    The New York Times wrote that he lacked 'the dispassionate temperament that is required of a judge.'
    Former American Bar Association president and US Senator Elihu Root declared him 'unfit' for the Supreme Court.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He graduated from Harvard Law School with the highest grade point average in the college's history.
    He gave up a lucrative private practice to become an unpaid public advocate.
    His writings about the 'right to privacy' were described by legal scholar Roscoe Pound as having done 'nothing less than adding a chapter to our law.'
    William O. Douglas said of opposition to his nomination, 'He was dangerous not only because of his brilliance, his arithmetic, his courage. He was dangerous because he was incorruptible.'
    Although one of the liberals on the Supreme Court, he opposed much of FDR's New Deal as an usurpation of state's rights by the federal government.
