Why he might be annoying:

His parents worked in the psychology field; brother and sister would also go on to work around shrinks.
He is loved by the left wing and the American Civil Liberties Union.
Many of his movie-of-the-week features – including his most successful, The Burning Bed – were, for their time, disturbing.
He directed what was for its time one of the biggest big budget bombs of the 1980s (hint: it was Gene Kelly’s final film appearance).
His team needed to go undercover to film the Wal-Mart movie lest they get sued.

Why he might not be annoying:

As a political activist – the primary inspiration for RGP – he opposed the 2003 Iraq War.
Among his blog titles: ‘The Koch Brothers Must Have LOVED Monopoly As Kids.’
Obviously, he had no idea what Xanadu would go on to inspire.
He funded about half of the Wal-Mart movie himself, with investors and lower-scale companies kicking in the rest.
Unlike Michael Moore and Morgan Spurlock, he was not one for the in-your-face style of documentary.
His small-budget short-schedule works feature the gamut, from legends such as Gregory Peck down to relative newcomers such as Russell Crowe.
