The Resume

    (November 15, 1905-March 29, 1980)
    Born in Venice, Italy
Birth name was Annunzio Paolo Mantovani
    Violinist and conductor
    Recorded over 50 albums
Known for his 'cascading strings' sound
Recorded the singles 'Red Sails in the Sunset' (1935), 'Serenade in the Night' (1936), 'Charmaine' (1951), 'Theme from the Moulin Rouge (Where Is Your Heart)' (1953), 'Cara Mia' (1954), 'Around the World' (1957) and 'Main Theme from Exodus' (1961)

Why he might be annoying:

He went by a pretentious single name.
His recordings were endlessly repackaged, creating at least an additional 50 compilation albums.
His album 'Mantovani Presents His Concert Favorites' consisted of studio tracks with applause dubbed onto them.
Space Age Pop declared, 'Virtually all of Mantovani's music is unexceptional and uninteresting.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He was considered a virtuoso on the violin.
He was musical director for several Noel Coward plays.
Those 'cascading strings' gave his records a distinctive sound.
He was the first artist to have a million-selling stereo album.
He remained popular as musical styles kept changing around him, prompting 'Variety' to call him 'the biggest musical phenomenon of the twentieth century.'
