    Its population has outstripped its infrastructure, resulting in frequent power cuts and water shortages.
    Its slum, Kibera, is the second-largest in Africa.
    In the 1990s, it was nicknamed 'Nairobbery' for its spiraling crime rate.
    An al-Qaeda bombing of the US embassy killed over 200 people (August 7, 1998).
    Following a disputed presidential election, hundreds of homes were burned during riots (2007).

    It is nicknamed 'Green City in the Sun' for its foliage and weather.
    It is headquarters for the United Nations Environment Programme.
    It has been described as 'the most modern and most cosmopolitan' city in East Africa.
    Its National Museum displays many of the hominid fossils discovered by the Leakey Family.
    It is the only world capital abutting a major game reserve (the Nairobi National Park).
