    Known as the 'shoemaker to the stars'
    Clients ranged from Mary Pickford to Marilyn Monroe
    He dropped out of school in the third grade.
    He filed for bankruptcy due to poor management (1933).
    Many of his early designs looked great but hurt the feet.
    He made his first shoes at age 11, for his sister to wear to her confirmation.
    To improve his shoe designs, he took anatomy classes at the University of Southern California.
    He took out 350 shoe-related patents.
    He was the first shoe designer to win the Neiman Marcus Fashion Award (1949).
