Composer

The Resume

    (April 6, 1953- )
Born in Uddingston, South Lanarkshire, Scotland, United Kingdom
Studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music (named a Fellow in 2001)
Best known for his long term collaboration with director Kenneth Branagh
Received Oscar nominations for 'Sense and Sensibility' (1995) and 'Hamlet' (1996)
Also composed scores for 'Henry V' (1989), 'Frankenstein' (1994), 'A Little Princess' (1995), 'Gosford Park' (2001), 'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire' (2005), 'Eragon' (2006), 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes' (2011), 'Thor' (2011), 'Brave' (2012), and 'Cinderella' (2015)

Why he might be annoying:

He composed the score for 'The Emoji Movie.'
He took part in Warner Brothers' attempt to compete with Disney with the widely panned 'Quest for Camelot.'
He was unsure whether he wanted to be an actor or composer before finally settling on the latter (higher demand anyway).
Despite a decades long collaboration with both Branagh and other high-profile directors like De Palma and Altman, he didn't work on a commercial hit until the 'Harry Potter' and 'Thor' films (with the possible exception of 'Frankenstein' in the early 90's).

Why he might not be annoying:

He was honored with the ASCAP Henry Mancini Award for 'outstanding achievements and contributions to the world of film music' (2013).
He received Golden Globe Original Score nominations for 'Dead Again' (1991) and 'Sense and Sensibility' (1995).
He received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the World Soundtrack Academy during the Gent Film Festival in Belgium (2015).
He was diagnosed with Leukemia after completing 'Great Expectations.'
He completed his work on 'Quest for Camelot' undergoing treatment from his hospital bed (making a full recovery that same year).
He is responsible for the one memorable part of 'Camelot' - that being the memorable ballad performed by Celine Dion and written by Carole Bayer Sager ('The Prayer').
He conduced the 'Music from the Movies' concert, to raise funds for Leukemia Research UK, staged at the Royal Albert Hall in 2007.
He is a criminally underrated/under-used composer known for bringing ordinary films to completely new levels (just listen to his almost perfect score for the family film 'A Little Princess').
When asked about his struggle with Leukemia during an interview on his 'Thor' movie score, he said: ' It most certainly changed my attitude in many ways. I have far more energy and vitality. I am just as determined to do the best work I can, and I suppose what it did give to me was a perspective on what is far more important in life.'
