    He cooperated with the House Committee of Un-American Activities in 1947 and gave the names of several colleagues with alleged communist sympathies.
    Without his famous mustache he was virtually unrecognizable as an actor.
    His acting career spanned four decades and included many memorable roles in both silent films and talkies.
    He was voted the best dressed man in America nine times.
    He earned a degree in engineering from Cornell University.
    He was a captain in the Ambulance Corps during World War One.
    He was a cousin of Irish writer James Joyce.
