    The Zenko-ji Earthquake killed 10,000 people in the city and its vicinity.
    Flooding of the Chikuma River resulted in 71 deaths and 30,000 people homeless.

    It is home to the M-Wave, a speed-skating arena which includes the world's largest wooden suspension roof.
    A world renowned ski-resort is located here.
    The Chausuyama Zoo located in this city contains a dinosaur exhibit, botanical park, and a natural history museum.
