Baseball Player
    (September 4, 1941- )
Nicknamed 'Hawk' for his beak-like nose
First baseman-outfielder for the Kansas City Athletics (1963-66; 1967), Washington Senators (1966-67), Boston Red Sox (1967-69) and Cleveland Indians (1969-71)
    Career stats:
Games- 900, At bats- 2,941, Batting average- .239, Home runs- 131, RBIs- 421
Named to the 1968 American League All-Star Team
Led the American League in RBIs with 109 in 1968
Broadcaster for the Boston Red Sox (1975-81)
TV play-by-play announcer with SportsChannel for the New York Yankees (1987-88)
TV play-by-play announcer for the Chicago White Sox (1982-1985, 1991- )
When asked why he caught balls with one hand, he replied, 'When you have hands as bad as mine, one hand is better than two.'
He quit baseball to play golf on the PGA tour, but discovered he wasn't good enough to make a living at it.
He spent one disastrous year as the general manager for the White Sox in 1986, turning perennial catcher Carlton Fisk into a disgruntled left fielder.
He has been accused of peppering his sportscasts with catch phrases, such as 'You can put it on the booooard... YES!' when White Sox players homer, to compensate for an otherwise drab play calling style.
He was very popular with Red Sox fans who vehemently opposed and demonstrated against his 1969 trade.
He wore a golf glove while batting and started a trend, thus credited with the invention of the batting glove.
Some of his catch phrases are amusing, such as 'duck snort' for a fly ball that lands between an infielder and outfielder and 'GAAAAASSSS' when a White Sox pitcher throws a fastball and the opposition whiffs.
Though sometimes criticized of painting the White Sox in perpetual favorable colors, his enthusiasm paid off in 2005 when they were crowned World Series champions.
